The ranges above are wide because "a slab" isn't one thing. Here's what actually pushes a quote up or down.
A standard 4-inch slab costs less than a 5–6-inch heavy-use or shop slab — thickness is priced by the yard of concrete it takes.
A basic broom finish costs less than stamped, exposed aggregate, or decorative work.
A truck that can pour straight from the street costs less than one that has to pump or wheelbarrow concrete to a tight backyard.
Removing and hauling off old concrete before a repour is priced on top of the new pour, not folded in for free.
Larger pours often bring the per-square-foot rate down slightly as forming and mobilization spread further.
Rebar or wire mesh adds material and labor, but is often what keeps a slab from cracking under real Valley clay movement.
South Texas clay and heat come with their own cost drivers — worth knowing before you compare a quote here to a number from somewhere else.
Expansive clay moves under a slab. Valley clay swells and shrinks with moisture more than sandier soils elsewhere — sub-grade prep and control joint spacing matter more here to keep a slab from cracking.
Heat dictates pour timing. Triple-digit slab temperatures in summer mean a pour that cures too fast can crack — jobs get timed for early morning or late in the day during the hottest stretch of the year.
Drainage is designed in, not assumed. Flat Valley ground means a slab's pitch has to be built on purpose — hard, fast Valley downpours make standing water one of the most common causes of slab problems here.
